Shortage of gynecologists in France: here is the list of 11 departments where these doctors no longer practice at all.
If it happens that some women feel stressed during an appointment with their gynecologist and adopt strange habits during consultations, other women simply have no gynecological follow-up. As a reminder, it is recommended to take your first screening smear at the age of 25. But according to an Ifop study, 60% of women, all social categories combined, and 70% of 25-34 year olds have already given up on a consultation with the gynecologist.
Moreover, one in three women have not consulted for two years. Very worrying figures which can be explained by the shortage of gynecologists in France. Indeed, in just 13 years, the number of gynecologists has increased from 3,600 in 2010 at 1,266 in 2023. Which represents a drop in 65%! Result, among the 101 French departments, 11 do not have a gynecologist. And 73 departments have fewer than 6 gynecologists per 100,000 inhabitants. But how can we explain this drastic drop in the number of gynecologists?

11 French departments without a gynecologist
In its latest issue, 60 million consumers recalls that the training of gynecologists was interrupted between 1984 and 2003. This is to harmonize with other European countries which do not recognize this diploma. Training was finally able to resume in 2004, with only 20 gynecologists allowed to attend each year. In 1984, France trained between 130 and 200 gynecologists per year.
