The Louis Vuitton Foundation is hosting the “Monet – Mitchell” exhibitions from October 5, 2022 to February 27, 2023. The dialogue between thirty-five works by Claude Monet (1840-1926) and thirty-five works (25 paintings and 10 pastels) by Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) – supplemented by a retrospective of around fifty of the artist’s works American – signs a poetic and visual dialogue between two great artistic figures.
The “Monet Mitchell” dialogue, organized in partnership with the Marmottan Monet Museum, stages a dialogue between the last period of Claude Monet (1914-1926), icon of Impressionism, and the work of the American artist Joan Mitchell, inscribed in the modernity of American abstract expressionism.
Through a selection of emblematic paintings by the two artists, the exhibition offers an enchanting journey echoed by a retrospective of the work of Joan Mitchell developed in collaboration with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
Acute sensitivity
Inspired by the surrounding nature of Île-de-France, Monet and Mitchell share an acute sensitivity to light and colors, the interplay of which constitutes the foundation of their art… Facing the landscape and nature, his garden for Monet , the banks of the Seine for Mitchell, they develop a pictorial approach which they define in analogous terms, referring to “sensation” for Monet and to “feelings” for Mitchell. Exceeding the imitation of nature, both fuse sensations, emotions and reminiscences through the right arrangement of colors.
The exhibition ends with the presentation of two exceptional sets. The Agapanthe Triptych by Monet (ca. 1915-1926) is exhibited in its entirety for the first time in Paris, while a selection of ten paintings from the cycle La Grande Vallée by Joan Mitchell is exceptionally brought together, a few decades after its parcel exhibition in 1984.
