Elon Musk figured out how to make Twitter profitable: by turning it into Facebook.
New year, new changes on Twitter. If the platform had long since begun a movement towards the contents suggested by the algorithm rather than presenting the tweets in chronological order, this organization will now become the default setting.
What changed ?
Concretely, this change of presentation does not really constitute a revolution, since it does not allow anything which did not already exist and does not remove possibilities. It was already possible to navigate between the content recommended by the algorithm according to the likes and the subjects with which we interact, and the tweets of people that we follow in chronological order by clicking on the icon in the shape of a star at the top right of the screen. From now on, we can switch from one feed to another by sliding to the right or to the left.
On the other hand, it is no longer possible to choose the organization in the default chronological order. If you leave the application or close the Twitter tab, the feed that will be presented to you the next time you log in will be the one generated for you by the algorithm. This will therefore make it much harder to ignore for those who prefer the historical orientation of Twitter, without “content curation”.
Note that the change has so far only been applied to Twitter for iOS, and not yet on Android or browser.
In tech, having a good idea means copying what works elsewhere
Giving more importance to the algorithm to organize content is not exactly what one would call a revolutionary idea in the sector. Facebook has been organized this way since almost its inception, to the point that every change in the algorithm can have terrible effects on some content creators or news outlets overnight. The tab’s “For You” name is otherwise the same as TikTok’s, for a similar organization. A coincidence that is hard to ignore.
Note that the possibility of passing recommended content to those of people or communities that interest us arrived on Reddit at the end of 2022. The revolution of Twitter is therefore to copy what works elsewhere and to do well mock UX for historical users.
