You know it, Windows 11 is not Microsoft’s most popular operating system among users. And unfortunately, these are not the latest figures that will make us lie.

We regularly like to take stock of the situation of the different versions of Windows. While Windows 11 update 23H2 is now available for download, can we hope that Microsoft’s latest has taken advantage of these last few weeks to attract new users?

One thing is certain: Windows 10 has no reason to worry.

Windows 11 is progressing laboriously, Windows 10 is still flirting with the heights

In just under two years, Windows 10 will officially no longer be supported by Microsoft. However, more than eight years after its first steps, the market shares still demonstrate today, a large domination of the OS launched in 2025. With more than 69.35% of market share for the month of October 2023 (compared to 72% in September), Windows 10 has only experienced a slight decline (given its age) and is still in first place, far, far ahead of its little brother.

According to data communicated by StatCounterthe market shares of Windows 11 would amount to 26.4% in October 2023. As a reminder, the latter were “only” 23.6% the previous month.

If this is therefore a relatively timid increase, particularly for an OS which wants to be in the prime of life, we should nevertheless note that this increase puts an end to a long period of stagnation. Since April 2023, the operating system’s market shares have remained relatively unchanged.

Windows 11: more than 400 million active users despite everything

Among Steam players, the observation is generally similar. Last September, nearly 58% of Internet users surveyed responded that they used Windows 10 as their operating system. For its part, Windows 11 even experienced a slight drop in popularity among gamers. Its market share has in fact fallen to 37.43% on Steam while it was approaching 40% in August.

If Windows 11 arrived after one of the versions of Windows most popular with users, we must recognize that its low level of popularity, more than two years after its launch, is questionable.

In addition to having been cut from certain features appreciated by Windows 10 users, the configurations required to install the latest version of the operating system have undoubtedly not helped it to expand its audience. Despite everything, Microsoft says it is satisfied and claims that Windows 11 now has more than 400 million active devices each month.
