Opel details its electrification strategy, which will push the German manufacturer to abandon combustion engines in Europe in 2028. Among future models, replacements for the Insignia and Crossland will be electric.
One is a large sedan, a category in decline and abandoned by many generalist manufacturers, and the other duplicates the range, evolving in the shadow of another city SUV. But if we could fear for their future, the Opel Insignia and Crossland will be well renewed.
Thus, Opel, which is now part of the Stellantis group, has detailed its electrification plan, which notably plans to replace the Insignia and Crossland with electric cars. As a reminder, Opel will go all-electric in Europe in 2028.
The Insignia, the latest General Motors model

The Insignia, offered as a sedan and station wagon and whose current generation was launched in 2017 and facelifted in 2019, is the latest model in Opel’s lineup to be based on a General Motors (GM) platform. Its end of life is therefore approaching, since a car is generally replaced after 6 to 7 years of service. Perhaps this time it will be necessary to wait a little longer, the project of an Insignia-e, if its name is preserved, probably not being the current priority of Opel.
We do not yet know anything about this future model, starting with the platform it will use. However, we imagine that it could be the eVMP, derived from the EMP2 platform used by thermal models, unless Opel waits until the arrival of the next platforms dedicated to electric STLA from Stellantis , expected for 2026.
The Crossland, Opel’s other city SUV

The Opel Crossland, originally called Crossland X, was also launched in 2017. It has since received a restyling in 2021. However, unlike the Insignia, it is not based on a GM platform, but on a PSA platform. It had indeed been developed in collaboration with the French group, before the latter acquired Opel in 2017.
He continues his career today in the shadow of the Mokka, the other city SUV in the range. The Crossland is however not devoid of arguments since it is more oriented towards families, thanks to better habitability and more advanced practical aspects than the Mokka. We imagine that this positioning could be maintained by this future Crossland-e, if its name is retained, which will always have to be distinguished from Mokka. Indeed, the latter already offers an electric version Mokka-e, which we say that the replacement for the Crossland could also take over the eCMP platform.
Among the other trendy novelties from Opel, the manufacturer announces an electric version of its compact Astra for next year. The Astra-e will be available as a five-door sedan and a Sports Tourer station wagon.
Finally, by the middle of the decade, the Opel Manta will also be entitled to an electric descender. This Manta-e could, however, take the form of a coupe SUV and therefore would not have much to do with its predecessor.
