The number of super-rich is increasing rapidly
A Chinese billionaire becomes a billionaire almost every day

The pandemic caused an explosion of prosperity in China last year – and pushed many entrepreneurs into the highest income bracket. Almost every day the People’s Republic has one billionaire more. There are now more billionaires living in Beijing than in the US financial metropolis of New York.

Almost every day China has an extra dollar billionaire, according to a report. Their number rose by 307 to 1,185 last year, according to the new rich list published by the Shanghai magazine “Hurun”. The country with the second largest economy now has five times more US dollar billionaires than ten years ago.

The richest Chinese is therefore the 67-year-old mineral water entrepreneur Zhong Shanshan with a fortune of 60.6 billion dollars. The 38-year-old founder of the Tiktok video platform, Zhang Yiming, now ranks second with $ 52.8 billion. He is followed by the head of the car battery manufacturer CATL, Zeng Yuqun. The 53-year-old was able to triple his fortune to $ 47.4 billion. Internet giant Tencent’s boss Pony Ma slipped to fourth place. Similarly, Alibaba founder Jack Ma landed in fifth place.

Against the background of the crisis in the housing market in China, for the first time no real estate entrepreneur is in the top ten places. The founder of the highly indebted real estate giant Evergrande, Xu Jiayin, who headed the list in 2017, fell from fifth place in the previous year to 70th place with just $ 11.3 billion.

More billionaires in Beijing than in New York

The Corona year 2020 caused an explosion of prosperity, especially in China. In the ranking of the US business magazine “Forbes” from March 2021, almost every third new billionaire came from China or Hong Kong. The People’s Republic has almost caught up with the United States in terms of the total number of the super-rich.

According to the analysts, Beijing is now home to more billionaires than New York City. The Chinese capital gained 33 billionaires within twelve months and had 100 super-rich Chinese on the reporting date. That was one more than in the US financial center, which had only seven billionaires more than in 2020. Hong Kong followed in third place in the city ranking with 80 billionaires (plus 9).
