We already knew that Qualcomm’s future Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 was going to play in the big leagues, even surpassing the Apple M2. The first benchmarks available reveal that it would even rival the M3.
Logically succeeding the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is inevitably eagerly awaited by fans of high-end Android smartphones. A certain @negativeonehero shared the benchmark results (Geekbench 6 and AnTuTu) of the future Qualcomm SoC on X.com and these show real progress compared to the previous generation and even tickle the performance of Apple’s chips . Do the M2 and M3 have anything to worry about?
Impressive scores on Geekbench 6
In single-core, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 reaches new heights, since it obtained a very nice score of 2,845. In multi-core, it has nothing to be ashamed of either, since its score is 10,628. Its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 “only” reached 7,249 points installed in the Galaxy S24 Ultra. A very good progression of 46% in multi-core, and a score in single-core also much higher.
A performance which could be explained in part thanks to the use of performance cores Phoenix type, without using as muchefficiency cores. The energy consumption of the SoC should therefore logically be increasing, but still offset by the 3 nm “N3E” engraving from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). A highly advanced semiconductor manufacturing process that pushes the performance of electronic chips to ever higher levels.
Surprising and very positive result for Qualcomm: Gen 4 is almost as efficient as Apple’s M3 chip (see image and legend below), which is a benchmark in the field of SoCs.
Questions and uncertainties
Even if these excellent performances indicate that the competition between Android smartphones and those from Apple, equipped with the A series, will be increasingly fierce; some questions remain unanswered. The very high multi-core scores on Geekbench do not mention the power consumption which made it possible to achieve them.
Another gray area concerns the benchmark carried out on AnTuTu. Indeed, in the results given by the latter, it was the code name “Lahaina” which was mentioned. This code name normally corresponds to the Snapdragon 888 and not to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, called “Pakala”. It is therefore highly possible that these scores were arranged, or even falsified. Caution must therefore be exercised regarding the veracity of these results.
On paper, Qualcomm’s latest SoC appears like a miniature war machine, capable of competing with Apple’s best chips. However, since uncertainties remain about the validity of these tests, it is best not to get carried away just yet.
