BERLIN (Reuters) – The shooter on Monday at a lecture hall at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, was an 18-year-old German biology student with no criminal record, authorities said.

One of the four people affected in the midday attack died of his injuries, Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Thomas Strobl told a press conference, while the assailant committed suicide with his weapon.

The latter had bought two weapons abroad, said Mannheim police chief Siegfried Kollmar, adding that he could not reveal the name of this country so as not to harm the investigation.

Police have searched the gunman’s home in Mannheim but it is too early to know for sure the motive for the attack, the regional prosecutor said.
