The Stanley: inspiration for horror master Stephen King

"You have to promise me that you won't go in there – you have to avoid the room." The hotel "The Stanley" inspired Stephen King.

"Here's Jacky!" Almost everyone knows him, nobody forgets him. This ominous exclamation comes from the novel by Stephen Kings (73) "Shining" and is probably one of the most famous quotes in film history. Hardly anyone knows that King drew his inspiration for the horror novel from his own hotel visit: "The Stanley" left its mark on the cult author …

The horror lives in Colorado, more precisely in Estes Park. And yet it was pure coincidence when the master of horror, Stephen King, ended up there in 1973. Because the highway was closed, he had to stay overnight at "The Stanley", which has had 26 different owners in its history.

Jim Carrey stayed here – and fled

Room 217, in which King stayed, must have left such a lasting impression that a fantastic story about loneliness and madness could be spun out of it: "Shining"! Eerie things are said to have happened and are still happening in 217. What King himself experienced there, he remains silent about it to this day.

US actor Jim Carrey (58) was also a guest in the horror room. On the occasion of the filming of "Dumb and Dumber", he lived in "The Stanley" and stormed out of 217 at night, as US media reported. Despite numerous requests from his fans on Twitter, the 58-year-old is still not ready to report on his horror night.

Incidentally, the horror hotel was not used as a film set for the strip with Jack Nicholson (83). But for a few dollars you can book a scary tour. Those who stay at the "Shining Hotel" can enjoy a very special experience of the TV program: "Shining" is shown on channel 42 – in an endless loop. In Corona times, however, it can also be wonderfully creepy on the couch at home. If that's not enough, you can still postpone the sequel, "Doctor Sleeps Awakening", with Ewan McGregor (49) in the lead role.
