The Swimmers (Netflix): is the film inspired by a true story?


On November 23, the film The Swimmers is to be discovered on Netflix. The opportunity to know the true story of this Syrian swimmer who fled her country at war to participate in the Olympic Games.

On November 23, Netflix will release a new feature film, called The Swimmers. Inspired by a true story, this film tells the incredible story of Yusra Mardini, a young Syrian refugee who fled the war. This swimmer participated in two editions of the Olympic Games. “It’s a movie that anyone around the world can identify with,” said the 24-year-old. “We would like this film to bring about a change in society”.

The directors of The Swimmers even went to visit the family of the young woman, in Germany : “We told them the whole story. We wanted it to be the real story, the real story. They really put a lot of time and energy into this project, and we had no doubts that they would do a great job.” The young swimmer has already watched the film twice. For her, it is impossible to give her best passages as there are so many: “Honestly, the movie as a whole is my favorite scene!”.

A very moving film

However, Yusra Mardini admits with ease that she felt a strong emotion watching the film which traces her life, her fight and her sports career : “I was crying every two minutes“. “What an honor and privilege to open the festival with the true and inspiring story of the Mardini sisters. A city as multicultural and diverse as Toronto is the perfect place to launch our film which elevates the visibility and voice of refugees, reminding us that the human ability to survive is stronger than most of us realize”enthused the director.
