The Voice – Mewhy makes Vianney cry during auditions: “It was more complicated for him than for me…”

INTERVIEW

A suspended moment… Saturday evening, Mewhy, his real name Gilles, upset the coaches of The Voice with its delicate and sincere recovery of Holidays by the sea by Michel Jonasz. “It’s not that I want you on my team, it’s that I absolutely need you,” Mika told him after a standing ovation from the public and the other coaches. Vianney, for his part, was on the verge of tears after the performance of the young Belgian, who nevertheless operates very far from the music studios. At 27, Mewhy actually works in “panade”, a Belgian word… designating baby purees! Passionate about music since a young age, the young man focuses on The Voice to make his dream come true. Interview.

How did you experience your blind auditions?

It was really between dream and reality. I had a lot of trouble telling the difference between the two.

The coaches fought for you. Did you expect such success?

No because I was mainly focused on my music. Before auditioning, I tried to let go and not think about the game. My goal was to share something that goes beyond the song itself. I had to be totally connected to myself.

Why did you choose this song by Michel Jonasz?

I wanted the courage that some people have in the face of adversity, illness, professional and personal difficulties. This song makes us return to this strength that we can have, and that my grandmother has. I thought of her while performing it.

Did you spend vacations at the seaside with her?

Yes ! I have many memories with my grandmother. We have a close relationship because we are both very curious. She is interested in my journey, and I in hers.

What made you want to do The Voice ?

I had a dream about being in a big game with music and lots of excitement. When I woke up the next day, I was contacted by The Voice. That’s how I got here!

Did you have an idea of the coach you wanted to work with?

I hadn’t thought about it much. When they turned around, I saw that Vianney was very affected but he was blocked by Mika. I didn’t take it badly because it’s the game, and it was a nice gesture from Mika who really wanted me on his team. It was certainly more complicated for Vianney than for me because he wanted to convince me and he couldn’t do it.

Where does your stage name come from?

I found this stage name when I moved to Australia when I was 18. Ever since I was little, I dreamed of being in the desert, about to die. It’s not very fun, I admit, but it pushed me to go this far. I had to physically go into the desert. There, I met a man who then disappeared. It was kind of crazy, and that’s when I came up with the idea for “Mewhy” because I was like, “Why me?”

Do you make a distinction between Mewhy, the artist, and Gilles, the man that you are?

There isn’t any and I think that’s what makes me a little crazy (Laughs)!

What can we wish you with The Voice ?

May I continue to meet people and deepen those I have already made! I would also like to perform songs that speak to me.

And put an end to baby purees?

Yes, if I’m given the opportunity to put an end to the mess, I’ll take it! It’s a food job. On the other hand, I don’t see myself devoting my life to music, I need something else!
