INTERVIEW

Zazie’s day had started very badly… until Morpho, 22, took over the blind audition stage to resume That’s not how dreams aremade, a captivating stroll by Belgian artist Jasper Steverlinck. Despite the sadness of the song, the coach of The Voice was overwhelmed with happiness, Morpho’s interpretation was so beautiful and powerful. If the other four coaches, Vianney, Mika, Bigflo and Oli, also turned, it was quite naturally towards Zazie that the 22-year-old turned. It was written. A real no-brainer. And this mutual crush ended this last blind audition session in style. Next week, the candidates will face each other in battles. A next step which does not impress Morpho, ready to do anything to shine in the adventure. Interview.

How did you feel during the blind auditions?

It was a particularly stressful moment. We’re on a big stage with lots of cameras, it’s impressive! But I was also very excited to be able to perform this song that was close to my heart.

They all turned around. Did you expect this?

I was contacted in September to take part in the show so I didn’t particularly have any expectations. Especially since I have already done The Voice in Belgium a few years ago. I made it to the quarter-finals. It was a great experience, I met lots of people. But I didn’t want to try an experience like that again because it’s stressful to participate in a TV show. I finally told myself that it was a good opportunity, that I had to do it to enjoy the moment and share my music. During the auditions, I tried not to think about the seats, to just be in the moment. So it was very intense when all the coaches turned around, especially so quickly.

Zazie has pulled out all the stops for you to join her team…

I don’t remember exactly what she said but she did most of the talking. Either way, no matter what she said, I would have gone to her team. She is one of my most significant French musical influences and I really wanted to work with her.

Why did you perform a song little known to the general public during the auditions?

Jasper Steverlinck is a Belgian artist that I have followed for a very long time and I wanted to highlight him. The lyrics of his song particularly touch me, he talks about a romantic breakup and the feeling of wanting at all costs to find the one you loved.

What does Morpho, your stage name, mean?

The Morpho is a blue butterfly. I chose this name a year ago because I really needed to dissociate myself from myself and it suited me well. This butterfly is synonymous with hope and freedom. Morpho is still Mathias but a freer and less self-conscious Mathias.

What do you expect from the adventure The Voice ?

I hope it will allow me to make a living from music. For now, I’ve just released an EP in English and I’m still a singing student at the conservatory. I have lots of ideas in mind and really want to try writing in French, why not collaborate with Zazie too!
