Klopp attacks homophobic Liverpool fans
At the start of the new Premier League season, Liverpool clearly wins, but the win at Norwich City has consequences. Team manager Jürgen Klopp takes on his own fans, who attract negative attention with homophobic chants. He also talks about his personal development.
Team manager Jürgen Klopp from the English football club Liverpool FC criticized their own fans for homophobic chants and asked them to rethink. “When they start singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, it gives you goose bumps and a boost. The other songs are a complete waste of time, and if you believe in what you are singing, then you are an idiot”, said Klopp.
During the clear 3-0 win in the Premier League opening game last Saturday, Reds supporters insulted host Norwich City’s Billy Gilmour as a “hustler”. The club condemned the behavior, Klopp also met with Paul Amann, founder of the Liverpool LGBT fan group “Kop Outs”. The coach was quoted on the club’s Twitter account as saying that he “will never understand why you sing a song against something in a football stadium”. The former professional also said: “I never understood that”, and this behavior of not singing about your own team, but killing others, “I never liked”.
Especially at Liverpool such excesses are completely unnecessary. “We probably have the best songbook in the world,” said Klopp. It is therefore easy to stop singing the offensive song. “We can now decide: this is no longer our song. I’m not sure if people will listen to me, but it would be nice.” Such chants would also not help the team.
Klopp also remembered mistakes from old times. “I’m 54 now and when I was 20 we said so many things that we didn’t even think about,” said the long-time professional at FSV Mainz 05: “We live in a time when we’re learning a lot . ” Regarding his own development, he said that “34 years later we have happily learned that you just don’t say things like that”.
