Of the SSD super fast certainly, but which encounter problems of heating and throttling to the point that it is abnormal.
They’ve been shown and shown, but the first PCI Express 5.0 SSDs are finally starting to become “widely” available. Unfortunately, the most comprehensive tests of these precursors have revealed some inconveniences.
A heating management problem
The most precise test at this level is undoubtedly the one quoted by our colleagues from Tom’s Hardware. Indeed, TechPowerUp had in its hands the latest model from Corsair, the MP700.
As for the speed and speeds of the SSD, we can always quibble about the more or less kept promises of PCI Express 5.0, but the concern lies elsewhere. Indeed, as the journalist has demonstrated, not only does the MP700 rise quickly in temperature, but it is unable to manage the throttling which must allow it to lower its performance to cool down.
So after testing for 86 seconds read or 55 seconds write, the MP700 simply disappeared from Windows Disk Management. The SSD was no longer visible and, of course, no longer usable.
Phison does not turn a deaf ear
TechPowerUp was forced to restart the system for the MP700 to appear again. Note that if the manipulation did not cause the slightest loss of data, the behavior is abnormal. Phison, manufacturer of the SSD controller, has also responded to Tom’s Hardware.

A fix in progress
We obviously regret that such a problem could exist on such recent hardware, but we are happy to see Phison take the matter seriously. The manufacturer points out, however, that an SSD with E26 controller should not be used without a heatsink.
” It is important to note that all E26 SSDs shipped without a heatsink are intended for use with a heatsink. Most motherboards that ship with PCIe Gen5 enabled also include cooling specifically designed for Gen5 SSDs. We offer the “bare drive” option to allow customers to use their existing cooling products “.
Of course such an SSD must be used with a heat sink and it is not a question of pushing the chip towards 95°C “for fun”. Still, the test conducted by our colleagues was essential. We should soon be able to test this Corsair MP700 SSD and we hope to be able to verify the effectiveness of the Phison patch.
