There’s a Special Form of Jedi Combat in Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode 5

This is a sequence that takes place at the end of episode 5 of the series Obi-Wan Kenobi and which has delighted many fans – just take a quick look at social networks, forums or community sites like Reddit to be sure. It must be said that it sublimates the main antagonist of the series, which gives hope for a sacred finale with episode 6.

You understood it from reading the title: it is about a certain form of Jedi combat. Don’t scream too quickly at spoilers! It’s from Star Wars which it is, moreover of a series entitled Obi-Wan Kenobi. Therefore, how to believe that there would not be at one time or another Jedis, lightsabers and fights?

Two lightsabers for Vader

As you have understood, the scene we are talking about is the confrontation between Darth Vader and Reva, the Inquisitor who has risen from the rank of Third Sister and to Grand Inquisitor. She tries to take down the Sith Lord by surprise. However, this one had already seen clearly in his game and prevents him from dealing the fatal blow. During the fight, Vader – who never uses his own lightsaber, but uses one of the two pieces of Reva’s – ends up quickly gaining the upper hand: he finds himself with a red lightsaber in each hand. The image is obviously spectacular: Darth Vader with one saber was already a killer, but with two, it’s even more striking.

This is the first time in audiovisual works that Vader has found himself in this situation: until now, he had always appeared with only one lightsaber in his hand – his own. This claim does not hold for the comics: a similar scene is shown in the comic Marvel’s Star Wars: Annual #4published in May 2018.

According to Star Wars Comics, it is in this comic that Vader is first shown with a red lightsaber in each hand in the official story. But, here, he was confronted only with foot soldiers, simple Aqualishs, which he debits without difficulty. Above all, holding two sabers is the prelude to employing a special form of Jedi combat: the Jar’Kai, which is the tenth technique of lightsaber combat.
