The Montessori pedagogy appeals to many families these days. On TikTok, Megi, who teaches in a Montessori nursery school in Birmingham (United Kingdom), communicates regularly about her daily life as a teacher. As reported by our colleagues at Daily Mailshe filmed herself last February sorting the books she was going to read with her young students. Since not all of them can be read, some had to be put away in boxes. Among the books set aside: classics of early childhood literatureboth in France and with our neighbors across the Channel.

“Not an ideal book for children”

The young woman’s 39,000 subscribers were able to see her show and list the works concerned. In first position: Rainbow, the most beautiful fish in the oceans by Marcus Pfister. For Megi, the problem with this album published since 1992 lies in its morality. “I’m getting rid of it because it’s the story of a fish who has no friends unless he gives away all his shiny scales. This is not an ideal book for children.”explains Megi before slipping it into her box.

The young woman then chose a Scottish and modernized version of the tale Goldilocks and the three bears to replace old editions. An aesthetic choice: “Everyone knows the story of Goldilocks… I have several books Goldilocks and the three bears. And not all illustrations are great“, she estimated. The teacher also decided to get rid of all the books featuring Paddington Bear, an iconic character in the United Kingdom. Not very enthusiastic about the scenario, Megi also considered that children could read her adventures at home.

The message transmitted by books, “a concern” for teachers

In the caption of her video, Megi explains: “These last years, early childhood care establishments have started to remove certain books from their collections. This movement is often due to concerns about the messages these books may convey and a desire to promote more inclusive and diverse representation in children’s literature.

She adds : “There is lots of books that have incredible stories and that will stay on my shelves for the coming years.” The opportunity, perhaps, to make room for other authors of children’s literature, a sector which teems with new products every year.
