Covid-19 has affected hundreds of millions of people around the world since the start of the pandemic. Not everyone was affected in the same way. Some have died from it, others are suffering the effects of a “long Covid”, many have been lucky enough not to know than a flu-like state for a few dayssometimes associated with specific symptoms such as loss of taste or smell.

People infected and who have recovered well from the disease can at least take comfort in knowing that they have less risk of getting sick again in the following months. Indeed, the antibodies which made it possible to fight the disease remain present for a certain time in the organism and make it possible to be more or less immunized during this period. However, the duration of this immunity is difficult to quantify. Especially since it varies from one individual to another. However, a team of researchers from Columbia University (United States) thinks they have identified certain clues.

Loss of taste and smell, a good sign?

The study published in the journal Plos One in December 2022 looked at the level of antibodies present in the body of 306 adults, affected by Covid, in the months following their recovery. The researchers then compared these rates to the symptoms described by the patients. They noted a correlation between significant immunity and loss of taste and smell. In detail, people who experienced one of these symptoms were about twice as likely to display an antibody level, and therefore an immunity, above the average.

The study of course specifies that further work will be necessary to confirm this hypothesis. If a high level of antibodies after a cure is rather good news, a significant immune response to a virus also promises difficult days when you contract it. It is also the overreaction of the body to the Covid virus that causes serious cases. People with already weakened immune systems, such as the elderly, are most likely to trigger this reaction.
