They pull it off: Mercedes EQXX consumes only 1 liter of “fuel” per 100 kilometers

ELECTRIC CAR

At the CES in Las Vegas, Mercedes showed the next version of the Vision EQXX. The electric car is comparable to a 1-liter car in terms of power consumption and offers a range of 1,000 kilometers.

  • In Las Vegas, Mercedes is showing the next expansion stage of the Vision EQXX research vehicle.
  • The electric car will soon complete tests on public roads.
  • For the low power consumption, Mercedes chose a handy comparison from the petrol world.

In 2022, the CES will again be a magnet for well-known car manufacturers. Mercedes-Benz chose the (virtual) stage in Las Vegas to give us the next look at the Vision EQXX. The key data of the spectacular Stromer read like an engineer’s dream come true.

The research vehicle should achieve a purely electric range of 1,000 kilometers. That would be more than any Tesla Model S. Even though the built-in 100 kWh battery is only half the size and 30 percent lighter than the EQS that is already available. The battery can even be used in upcoming small cars with the star, said Daimler board member Markus Schäfer at the CES.

Additional range thanks to solar cells

According to calculations by the German manufacturer, the aerodynamically optimized (drag coefficient of 0.17), 1,750-kilogram vehicle consumes around 10 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per 100 kilometers.

If you apply this to the world of internal combustion engines, this results in fuel consumption of around one liter per 100 kilometers, according to Mercedes. A solar roof generates additional range. However, more than 25 bonus kilometers are not possible.

47.5-inch infotainment system with mini LED technology

Inside, technology lovers can expect a new hyperscreen with a diagonal of 47.5 inches and 8K resolution. With mini-LED, the same screen technology is used as in the iPad Pro from Apple.

If and when the car will ever go into series production is uncertain. Mercedes uses the study to convey the Group’s view of future electric cars. In the coming weeks, the Stuttgart-based company definitely wants to test the Vision EQXX prototype on public roads in order to prove that the long range is not just a pipe dream.
