Tarik Kiswanson, headliner of 23e Marcel Duchamp Prize

Monday October 16, the international jury of the Marcel-Duchamp Prize, supported by the Association for the International Diffusion of French Art and hosted in the form of an exhibition of finalists at the Center Pompidou, announced the name of its 2023 winner among the four artists named: the Franco-Swedish of Palestinian origin Tarik Kiswanson. This deploys a set of works around uprooting and metamorphosis, in particular with human-sized and suspended cocoons carrying “disaster furniture”, designed in France at the end of the Second World War to help the residents.

Also to discover: the new burlesque video by Bertille Bak, entitled Still life, which delves into the international flower industry, between ecological nightmare, unbalanced North-South relations and the tenderness of French calendar holidays. Bouchra Khalili presents her filmed work around collective emancipation struggles (notably the Arab Workers’ Movement in France in the 1970s). Finally, Massinissa Selmani stages the migration of her drawings on paper, often tragicomic, towards animation. E.J.

The Pernod Ricard Foundation Prize under the sign of ghosts

Pol Taburet, “Rain Appeal”, 2023.

Brazilian based in Brussels, curator Fernanda Brenner was asked to imagine two exhibitions in the French capital this fall: the inaugural one of the prestigious Mendes Wood DM gallery, which has just opened a new branch in Paris, Place des Vosges, and another in the ultra-contemporary building of the Pernod Ricard Foundation. There reigns the same attention to the spirit and imagination of the place. “Do you believe in ghosts? », “do you believe in ghosts?” », asked Pascale Ogier to Jacques Derrida in the film Ghost Dance by Ken McMullen in 1983. The curator, who selected six artists for the 24e Pernod Ricard Foundation Prize, asked them the question. The very beautiful clash interweaves their responses.
