While the brand new issue of magazine 60 Million consumers has just revealed its front page, it is the big surprise for us who discover that a very common consumer product on the tables of French families is in reality stuffed with pesticides. L’investigation revealed in this issue from February 2024 establishes, in fact, that THE rice that we eat very often contains pesticides, like the 5 fruits and vegetables most contaminated by them. The magazine analyzed no less than 40 rice references sold in supermarkets and specialized (organic) stores, from different origins, drawn from among the 4 rice varieties most consumed in Francenamely basmati rice, Thai rice, Camargue rice and long grain rice.
“We found residues of pesticides in 15 productseither more than a third of our panel” underlines 60 Million consumers. The magazine also specifies having detected 9 different pesticides in the packets of rice that we commonly buy in supermarkets to get our dose of starchy foods and to vary from pasta.

Fortunately, the investigation highlights that none of the substances found in rice exceeds the maximum regulatory limit set by the European Commission, but some of the molecules present in rice are considered “at risk” by the French Health Safety Agency ( Handles). These are tebuconazole (a fungicide and plant growth regulator) and cypermethrin (a powerful insecticide), which are called “potentially carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic for reproduction”. We also find in 3 rice references analyzed isoprothiolane, another pesticide banned for use in the European Union, but whose residues are tolerated in our food products.
