This electric car battery recharges quickly with an incredible lifespan

The Chinese group GAC, which plans to arrive in Europe, lifts the veil on its new P58 battery for electric cars, more resistant and which promises a range of up to 700 kilometers. In addition, it is distinguished by a very long lifespan of 1.5 million kilometers, which should make it possible to reduce the price of electric cars in the future.

Currently, there are fewer and fewer valid arguments against electric cars. However, the price and the range still remain significant obstacles for many motorists, although this last point has become less true over the years. What’s more, these two problems will soon be no more.

A new battery

And this in particular thanks to the development of new battery technologies. Indeed, manufacturers and equipment manufacturers continue to work on solutions offering better energy density, which makes it possible to store more energy in a reduced space and a lower weight. This has two advantages: greater autonomy and a smaller battery.

This also makes it possible to reduce the price, while the accumulator represents 40% of the total cost of an electric car. If the solid battery should definitely solve all the remaining problems of this engine, we will still have to wait before it arrives in production vehicles. But in the meantime, other solutions are arriving on the market, particularly from Chinese companies.

We think of CATL with its Qilin CTP 3.0 battery, or the recently awarded BYD Blade, but not only that. The GAC group, which notably owns the Aion brand, has just lifted the veil on a new accumulator offering many advantages. The latter is called P58and is in fact an evolution of the Magazine Battery 2.0 as indicated on the Chinese site AutoHome.

IF its exact capacity has not been announced, while it could be available in several versions depending on needs, the site It Home explains to us that it displays a density of 146.5 Wh/kg. Which is more than correct, as it uses LFP (lithium – iron – phosphate) chemistry, known to be less dense than NMC (nickel – manganese – cobalt).

Great longevity

This high density allows this new battery to display a range of 700 kilometers in a single charge. Be careful, because this figure is understood according to the Chinese CTLC cycle, much more optimistic than our European WLTP. This would give more like 600 kilometers with our approval, which is not that spectacular, but which at least has the merit of being realistic.

Perhaps versions offering a greater range will be offered a little later, like on the Peugeot e-3008 who knows? The site Gasgoo indicates a 3C charging rate (i.e. 300 kW of maximum power for a 100 kWh battery), allowing recovery of up to 250 kilometers in 10 minutes. Furthermore, this pack stands out in particular for its great resistance.

And for good reason, its composition combining nano-ceramic and polymer composite makes it possible to limit the risk of fire. Even in the event of an impact, the battery temperature only rose 1 degree. Enough to reassure future customers, since the resistance of the battery currently remains the big downside of electric cars.

These can sometimes be sent to the scrapyard after a simple small collision, because it is difficult to diagnose and repair the accumulator. The new P58 also displays great longevity, since it can withstand up to 3,300 fast charge cycles and theoretically last more than 1.5 million kilometers, rivaling technology developed by Northvolt. This new battery will be gradually implemented in Aion brand cars, including the new Hyper HT.
