In 2007, Steve Jobs lifted the veil on a device that would forever change our habits: theiPhone. But this device, as revolutionary as it was in its time, strangely did not allow you to copy/paste text. A mystery that has finally been elucidated, nearly a decade and a half later.
In fifteen years, the mobile phone industry has been radically changed. What was a simple device for phoning away from home eventually became a real all-rounder, giving rise to what we now call “smartphones”. Earlier this week, an ex-member of Apple shared on Twitter a new anecdote around the very first iPhone.
The first iPhone reveals one of its secrets
In a tweet, Ken Kocienda, a former Apple engineer who worked on the first iPhone, reveals the reason behind the impossibility of copying/cutting/pasting text on the brand’s very first smartphone at the apple :
” The original iPhone had no cut/copy/paste. The quickest explanation is that I didn’t have time to do it properly. I had too much work to do on the keyboard, autocorrect, and text system. The design team didn’t have time either. We therefore waived this feature for version 1.0 “, he explains.
Behind the most inexplicable decisions sometimes hide reasons that could not be more ordinary. A simple lack of time as a justification, which will have amputated the iPhone of a functionality that has become unavoidable (and essential) today. It was only later that Ken Kocienda and his teams would implement the clipboard function on the iPhone. An amusing anecdote, which reminds us above all how much water has flowed under the bridges and how much priorities have changed in the space of a few years…
