This is what it looks like inside – the secret of the chapel on the Naschmarkt revealed

Normally the chapel at the Naschmarkt is closed. It was inaugurated on Friday after extensive renovation. Our “Krone” photographer was able to take pictures of the interior of the architectural jewel.

It is a listed gem and for many stallholders at the Naschmarkt something like their patron saint. The small Johann Nepomuk Chapel opposite Linke Wienzeile. It belongs to the market office and has been scaffolded since August last year. The more than 100-year-old chapel was badly affected by wind and rain. The City of Vienna invested 110,000 euros and renovated it from the ground up, uncovering and renewing the old plaster. Has stood here since 1916. Workers applied a breathable paint and new graffiti protection to protect the chapel from vandalism. It will now be illuminated inside and out and will also shine in the evenings in the future. The chapel, which has stood here since 1916, will remain closed to the public. “It also has something to do with Corona. It would be the wrong time to open now,” says market office spokesman Alexander Hengl. Inside the chapel there is a statue of a saint, probably Mary. The white altar wall is surrounded and decorated with columns. On the sides are reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Saint Nepomuk.
