This is what the SVOD consumer looks like in France


SVOD services are not only reserved for young audiences, contrary to what one might think at first glance. Older generations have also succumbed to the charm of this new mode of consumption. In any case, this is revealed by the new study by the Kantar Institute, carried out in October 2022 among more than 15,000 French people aged 15 and over.

According to this study, users aged 50 and over are among the most numerous SVOD consumers. They represent 33% of all users of streaming platforms, compared to 19% for 15-24 year olds and 25-34 year olds and 29% for 35-49 year olds. This domination of the oldest is confirmed if we take the streaming platforms separately. On Netflix, people aged 50 and over represent 32% of subscribers compared to 20% for 15-24 year olds, 19% for 25-34 year olds and 29% for 35-49 year olds. Same story on Prime Video, which has 33% of people aged 50 and over in its ranks against only 16% of 15-24 year olds, the lowest percentage. Only Disney+ has fewer subscribers aged 50 and over (19%), while 35-49 year olds represent 32% of its customers and 25-34 year olds 27%.

Differences are also visible according to social class. CSP+ are the most represented users. In general, SVOD services account for 35% (38% on Disney+, 37% on Prime Video and 35% on Netflix). Students are the least present, representing 12% of platform subscribers (14% on Disney+, 10% on Prime Video and 13% on Netflix).

In comparison, the smartphone is used by only 24% of users surveyed, against 27% for the computer and 11% for touch pads.

Among all these modes of consumption, we note that Disney+ stands out with a more marked use of other screens (34% for the smartphone, 31% for the computer and 14% for the touch pad).

At the question “Which SVOD service(s) have you used in the past three months?“, 11% of French people answered Disney+, compared to 1% in 2020. 35% answered Netflix (23% in 2020) and 22% Prime Video (7% in 2020).
