Disney’s rejection

The appointment of Nimona at the Oscars is all the more interesting since this is a film that did not have an easy genesis.

It was originally supposed to come from Blue Sky Studios (The Ice Age), but when they were bought by Disney in 2019, things changed. The project, although in development for several years, finally fell by the wayside in 2021.

Disney was indeed not delighted with the LGBTQ+ content of Nimonaand in particular by the presence of a kiss between two characters of the same sex in the film.

Netflix then rushed to the aid of Nimona and announced that it would release the film in 2023. The platform supported its queer themes, specifying that the feature film addresses “the need to accept oneself and others as they are.”

Where Disney was too conservative, Netflix took a full bite out of the modernism of the film. And it paid off, because after its release at the end of June 2023 on the streaming platform, Nimona spent four weeks in the top 10 most viewed English-language films on Netflix around the world, in addition to landing an Oscar nomination.

Now, an even wider audience will be able to discover the adventures of Nimona and Ballister Boldheart on YouTube.
