The authorities are actively fighting against piracy, but illegal streaming sites constantly find parades. For example, several of the largest pirate streaming sites, such as Fmovies and Sflix, have recently changed domains in response to Indian court orders. These maneuvers show the resilience and adaptation of these platforms in the face of efforts to close them.

Another tool used to combat online piracy is DMCA takedown request (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). This mechanism allows copyright holders to request the removal of illegal content hosted online. Recently, the Warner Bros. targeted an IPTV portal hosted on GitHub. It requested its removal for alleged copyright infringement. The portal in question, iptv-org.github.io, offers playlists in M3U format. These files allow users to be linked to various channel streams via media players that facilitate access to the streaming content.

Warner Bros failed to close this IPTV portal hosted on GitHub

The site iptv-org.github.io attracts approximately one million monthly visitors and lists more than 37,000 channels, so it is not surprising to learn that some potentially violate copyright. Warner Bros. sent a DMCA takedown notice to GitHub via its anti-piracy partner, MarkScan which specifically targets content from the American company, including HBO And Cartoon Network. The site maintainers, or pirates, aware of the legal issues, reacted quickly to avoid a complete closure of their platform.

Faced with this request, they promptly deleted the offending content, while explaining that links to M3U playlists do not directly constitute copyright infringement. GitHub granted one business day to resolve the complaint, and the developers chose to comply by identifying and removing Warner Bros. channels. and Discovery. This rapid action allowed the site to stay on the linealthough some links were just as quickly restored subsequently after a re-evaluation by these same developers.
