Indeed, similar events had taken place in the Solar Temple sect, best known for its collective suicides. On December 23, 1995, the bodies of 16 people including 13 adults and three children aged 2, 4 and 6 years old were found dead in a clearing in Saint-Pierre-de-Chérennes in the Vercors.

The place was called “Le Trou de l’Enfer” and was particularly isolated. The 16 members of the sect killed themselves all together on the night of December 15 to 16, 1995. Forensic expertise showed that 14 of these people had been shot dead after having ingested sedatives and before be doused with gasoline and then set on fire. In total, there are 74 victims of this Solar Temple sect in France, Switzerland and Canada between 1994 and 1997.

If Fanny Robert, one of the two creators of the series, was inspired by the horrifying history of this sect, it is because she did not live far from where the massacre of 16 people took place in 1995. . “We started from a small adolescent trauma which was the massacre of the Solar Temple which took place a few kilometers from where I lived”, she revealed during a press conference before saying: “There was a huge slowdown in the region and it infused our imagination.”

However, if the story is inspired by this news item, the writers invented the entire rest of the series and in particular the religion that we hear about in it. “We started researching sects that have experienced this kind of tragedy,” explained Fanny Robert before adding: “But what was interesting for us was to create our own sect and our own religion. We worked a lot on this point, and we were especially inspired by the Manichaeist religion, which is based on the principle of good and evil.”
