Thousands of euros are gone – young Styrian victims of “fake police officers”

In the vast majority of cases, the victims of fraud by “fake police officers” are older people – but younger people are not immune to losing a lot of money either. On Wednesday, a 32-year-old in Seiersberg-Pirka was relieved of thousands of euros. He was put under a lot of pressure by the criminals on the phone.

At around 10 a.m., the man from the Graz area received a call on his mobile phone, he did not know the number. A female computer voice told him he was suspected of committing a crime and should press 5 for more information. The man was then connected to a woman who pretended to be a police officer in English and asked for his personal data. A “policeman” informed him in English that drugs and his ID card had been found in an apartment. If he didn’t transfer all of his assets to him, his bank accounts would be frozen, his ID and driver’s license would be confiscated, and he would be imprisoned. During the conversation, the unknown perpetrators put the 32-year-old under such pressure that he transferred several thousand euros to a Bitcoin account. Only then did the man end the call and file a complaint.
