Three automatic programs, six inductors, 17 power levels: Smeg launches the Area SIA1963DS hob

With the Area SIA1963DS, Smeg steps into modernity. The Italian abandons fixed wheels and sensitive sliders for a beautiful TFT touch screen. At least that was needed to set up the six inductors hidden under the 90 cm long glass surface.

How the pricing table works

We know Smeg for the very assertive look of its appliances, such as the FAB range of refrigerators. This visual identity has also imposed itself in the field of induction hobs; we remember for example the PI964N, which underlined its vintage side thanks to four physical wheels. The Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla (Emilian Metallurgical Enamels of Guastalla) has completely changed gears with the Area SIA1963DS, a 90 cm long and 52 cm deep hob equipped with six inductors for a total power of 11,000 W.

Indeed, the control panel here takes the form of a large TFT touch screen, placed in the center of the plate, on the front part. Thanks to it, the user can adjust the power on one of the 17 levels; It may not seem like much, but the most demanding chefs will appreciate being able to modulate the temperature so finely, which is not possible with only nine power levels. It should also be noted that Smeg has provided the Area SIA1963DS with three automatic programs which are rather three shortcuts to a preset power. The manufacturer promises that the temperature within the utensils can reach 44°C (to melt food), 70°C (to keep it warm) or 92°C (to boil water); a fairly rare precision for an induction hob.

The automatic programs of the SIA1963DS facilitate its use.

Smeg insists on the automatic recognition of utensils, regardless of their location on the hob. If this feature sounds impressive, you should know that all induction hobs are capable of this “feat”. Likewise, the different displays on the screen of the Area SIA1963DS may suggest that we are facing a plate using flexible zone technology, very many small inductors placed under the cooking surface allowing to place pots and pans anywhere on the plate. However, the manufacturer clearly states in its technical data sheet that the plate has “only” six inductors. This is also the maximum number of utensils that the Area SIA1963DS can accommodate.

As often with Smeg, the price seems a bit high for the features offered. Indeed, the Area SIA1963DS induction hob is available for 4000 €.
