The fairy tale classic “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” is the perfect Christmas film for millions of viewers on the holidays. The classic has been on TV for almost 50 years and never goes out of style.

Now streaming service Amazon Prime Video is presenting a remake of the classic fairy tale just in time for Christmas. The film has been shown in Germany since December 20, 2021. In the Norwegian adaptation of the German-Czech film, the pop singer Astrid Smeplass takes on the leading role.

The film is about Cinderella who, after the death of her parents, lives on her stepmother’s farm and is treated like a maid by her. Although the stepmother forbids it, Cschenbrödel keeps going into the forest. One day she meets the prince and his companions there.

Her stepmother and stepsister Dora are invited to the ball by the royal couple, at which the prince is supposed to choose a woman. With the witch hazel that Cschenbrödel received from servant Alfred, the girl receives a ball gown and sneaks into the party.

The prince immediately falls in love with Cinderella, but she has to leave the festival in a hurry. The prince rides after her and finds in Dora his supposed bride in the yard. Can Cinderella reveal her true identity and win over the prince?

Three hazelnuts for Cinderella: the differences between the new edition and the original

The film is a contemporary interpretation of the classic fairy tale. A boy lacks half his arm and a servant of the king is a black man. In addition, the prince’s two companions, Sami and Bendig, as well as the court teacher and the stylist show homosexual tendencies. At the end of the film, Sami and Bendig even kiss. They also refrain from making fun of the prince’s first dance partner during the ball.

In addition, Cinderella even saves the prince’s life, which is not the case in the original film. She reacts cautiously to his marriage proposal because it is going too fast because the two have only just met.

The remake is a lot more dramatic, which is also underlined by the use of orchestral music. In addition, special effects are used that were not possible in 1973.

There are a few differences between the remake and the original film. Some of the figures, such as the owl, the servant or Cinderella’s horse, have different names. In addition, Cinderella does not have to separate lentils and corn, but rather sort sequins by color.

One of the biggest deviations is that there is no wedding dress in the third nut, but that this cinderella transforms into herself. In addition, the stepmother tries to kill the prince and Cschenbrödel saves him.
