Three online games to review your geography

“Quizzity”, alone in the world

Locating, moreover very precisely, a given city on the planisphere depends on solid knowledge, but sometimes also on a pifometric approach to geography. We may know where to place Dakar, capital of Senegal and city located most westerly on the African continent, where to point Milan, Venice or Naples on the Italian Boot, or even to locate Tokyo, the most populous megalopolis in the world, without misunderstand Sapporo, capital of the mountainous island of Hokkaido, further north. But what about Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of the micro-state of Brunei, or Managua in Nicaragua? This English site challenges the player to place six given cities on a world map, to zoom in if necessary to place his marker, as close as possible to their exact geographical location. Points are awarded for its speed and accuracy of location. No opponent in the place, but the desire to improve his personal score, and minimize his margin of error. A little quiz to challenge yourself?

“GeoGuessr”, who finds wins

Imagine landing in the middle of nowhere, in a landscape you’ve never seen before, on a road you’ve never taken, and having three (tiny) minutes to guess where you just set foot. This is the site’s challenge GeoGuessr, designed by Swedish developer Anton Wallén in 2013, and which has more than 11 million subscribers today. Addictive, this geographic quest game is based on Google Street View in which you are catapulted: to flush out to the meter the exact place where you are – and this is the only way to get the coconut palm of 25,000 points ! -, one must appeal to his sense of observation and rely on the surrounding clues: signs, road signs, alphabet used, vehicle brands, landscapes, flora or even habitat. Recognize Lodz (Poland)? Lost. Guess that we are in Kuantan (Malaysia)? Next to the plate. The Little Thumbs have it hard here. Persevere they said.
