Today on TV: You’ve never seen the most famous monster in film history so sexy!

It’s easy to forget thanks to the MonsterVerse, but Godzilla has actually only been around the US cinema landscape for 26 years. In 1998, director Roland Emmerich brought the Japanese cult monster to the West and went his own way, which not only displeased the Godzilla studio Toho.

Emmerich received a 75-page document from Toho that clarified how Godzilla had to be portrayed and what couldn’t happen under any circumstances. Godzilla needs a tail, three toes on each foot and four fingers on each hand, but he is not allowed to die and jokes about Godzilla are taboo.

Emmerich did not adhere to all of these guidelines and instead tried to portray the giant lizard as “sexy” and “sensual” as possible. In Japan, Emmerich’s Godzilla is now known simply as Zilla, as Hollywood has removed the kaiju’s godlike qualities, according to producer Shōgo Tomiyama. In “Godzilla: Final Wars,” Zilla even faced off against the “real” Godzilla and was defeated within seconds.

The blockbuster version of the Japanese monster cult

Godzilla is a giant lizard that has mutated into a monster after nuclear tests and sets course for Manhattan, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Biologist Nick Tatopoulos is called in to find out why the giant lizard can’t be stopped. Together with the French secret agent Philippe Roache, he finds out that Godzilla didn’t come to Manhattan by chance and that there is a reason for his destructiveness.

Matthew Broderick (“No Hard Feelings”) plays the role of Dr. Nick Tatopoulos, who stars alongside Jean Reno (“Lift”) as Philippe Roache. Also starring are Maria Pitillo as Audrey Timmonds and Hank Azaria as Victor Palotti.

Godzilla and his origin story

The basic idea for the film “Godzilla” comes from producer Tomoyuki Tanaka. This was followed by the first “Godzilla” film in 1954 (“Gojira”) directed by Ishirō Honda, which is the original Japanese version. The first American film adaptation was directed by Roland Emmerich in 1998. The “MonsterVerse” franchise began in 2014 with a “Godzilla” remake and is produced by Legendary Pictures and co-produced and distributed by Warner Bros.
