The only man to have won the Oscar for Best Actor three times, for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood and Lincoln, the great Daniel Day-Lewis did not win one for his performance in The Last of the Mohicans. Worse: he wasn’t even named! Without going so far as to say that he should win the statuette for each of his roles, it is still a little “scandal” as he is incredible in the Michael Mann film that Arte is broadcasting this evening.
Released in theaters in 1992, The Last of the Mohicans immerses the viewer in 1757 in the State of New York, while the war rages between the French and the English for the appropriation of Indian territories. A young English officer is tasked with leading two sisters, Cora and Alice Munro, to their father. They are saved from an ambush by Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis), a frontiersman of European descent raised by the Mohican Chingachgook and his son Uncas. The three men agree to escort the two girls to their destination.
Adapted from the novel by James Fenimore Cooper published in 1826, The Last of the Mohicans is a fantastic adventure film centered on the fight for freedom. A film as breathtaking as it is moving, whose sumptuous settings, the superb staging of Michael Mann (Heat) and the magical music of Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman will leave an impression on you. But The Last of the Mohicans is above all a film in which Daniel Day-Lewis delivers an exceptional performance, with great accuracy.
To slip into the shoes of Nathaniel Hawkeye, Daniel Day Lewistrue to his reputation as an extreme comedian, spent several weeks alone living like a hermit in the middle of nature, in Alabama. “If he didn’t hunt what he ate, he didn’t eat.”, Michael Mann will say. The Briton also learned to use a tomahawk, track animals, build a canoe and use his famous rifle.
