Tonight on TV: it is with this film that Leonardo DiCaprio FINALLY won his Oscar for Best Actor

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: the film that made DiCaprio legendary.

In 2001, producer Akiva Goldsman acquired the rights to Michael Punke’s manuscript, published a year later. Titled The ghost, it is based on the true story of trapper Hugh Glass: left for dead by his teammates after being attacked by a bear, the latter undertook a journey of more than 300 km on the trail of the one who betrayed him. A heroic destiny which also inspired the 1971 feature film, The Wild Convoy.

Several director-actor duos are successively associated with the project: Park Chan-Wook and Samuel L. Jackson, then John Hillcoat and Christian Bale. It was not until 2011 that director Alejandro González Iñárritu was officially attached and the title role went to Leonardo DiCaprio.

While he was considering stepping into the shoes of Steve Jobs, the actor preferred to devote himself to The Revenant, despite the difficulties involved in filming on natural settings (particularly in Canada) at temperatures that could drop down to ‘at -30°.

By his own admission, this is the film “the most difficult of his career“. The actor confided being “out of icy rivers“, to have “slept in animal carcasses” and to have “regularly ate raw bison liver“.

Leonardo DiCaprio thus delivers an animal interpretation, magnified by the hostility of the wide open spaces and the virtuosity of the shots. A memorable performance which finally allowed him to achieve recognition at the 88th Academy Awards, where he was awarded the precious statuette for Best Actor – a reward of which he had always been deprived despite an almost flawless filmography .

With an average of 4.2/5, the Revenant is the feature film by Alejandro González Iñárritu best rated by AlloCiné spectators.
