Tonight on TV: rated 4.1/5, this is one of the best Tom Hanks films

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: the reunion of Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks.

In 1994, Robert Zemeckis directed Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump – a successful collaboration crowned with 6 Academy Awards, including those for Best Director and Best Actor. Six years later, the two men reunited for Alone in the World.

Here, Tom Hanks plays Chuck Noland, a FedEx employee who finds himself shipwrecked on an uninhabited island after his plane crashes. For four years, he tries to survive and befriends a volleyball, which he names Wilson.

It’s hard not to be moved by this astonishing Robinsonade for which Tom Hanks gave of himself by losing more than 20 kilos and letting his hair and beard grow. Deprived of a playing partner, the actor surpasses himself in this particularly difficult exercise.

His performance earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. If the prestigious statuette is won by Russell Crowe for Gladiator, Tom Hanks is however awarded the Golden Globe in the same category.

Realistic, harsh and poignant film, but also hopeful, Alone in the world was a success upon its release. It collected 424 million dollars in revenue worldwide, for a budget of 90 million. In France, 1.7 million spectators went to see it in theaters.

Alone in the world by Robert Zemeckis with Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, Nick Searcy…
