Tonight on TV: the film that made Alain Delon a star

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Alain Delon in a cult thriller.

In 1960, Plein soleil marked the first appearance in the cinema of the character created by the American novelist Patricia Highsmith: Tom Ripley, a troubled but charming dandy, art lover in his spare time, forger and usurper of genius, who becomes the man to do everything from an indolent young heir, Philippe Greenleaf.

When René Clément is responsible for bringing it to life on the big screen, it is first intended for actor Jacques Charrier, while Alain Delon is assigned the role of Philippe Greenleaf. However, after reading the script, the latter convinces the director – and the producers – to play the protagonist, claiming that he shares his character as a thug.

He who entered the world of cinema somewhat by chance thus obtains a leading composition. At 24, he literally radiates the screen with his mystical aura. Its poisonous charm, under the bright sun of Italy, is then at the service of a dark story of lust and murder.

Alain Delon thus reaches the rank of star. During its first operation, full sun totaled 1.8 million cinema admissions. His career definitely took off in the 1960s, the actor constantly touring with renowned directors such as Luchino Visconti, Henri Verneuil and Jean-Pierre Melville.
