Tonight on TV: the most underrated film in the Jurassic Park saga

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Alan Grant is back on Dinosaur Island…

Universal Pictures

When it was released in 2001, the third installment of Jurassic Park divided spectators. Considered the worst episode of the original saga, the film is also the least profitable, earning “only” 368 million dollars at the worldwide box office for a budget of 93 million. In France, after the 6.5 million spectators of Jurassic Park and the 4.8 of the Lost World, Jurassic Park III only attracts 2 million spectators in theaters.

Fans especially regret the absence of Steven Spielberg behind the camera. Occupied by AI, Artificial Intelligence, the latter actually passes the torch to Joe Johnston (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Jumanji). And if the original idea of the father of the saga is kept, the writing of the screenplay, which is not based on a novel by Michael Crichton unlike the first two feature films, turns out to be laborious and sees no less than nine screenwriters. Finally, Jurassic Park III suffers from a misunderstanding between the director and his actors, Alessandro Nivola having notably qualified the shooting “very painful experience“…

However, Jurassic Park III remains very well made by offering a coherent story and its share of breathtaking action scenes (introducing two new species: the Pteranodon, a flying reptile, and the Spinosaurus), all completed in an hour and a half. It is obviously a great pleasure to see the character of Alan Grant, still played by Sam Neill, and that of Ellie Sattler, played by Laura Dern. 20 years later, they reunite with their former sidekick Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic World: The World After. Third installment of the new successful franchise, it has been in our dark rooms since June 8th.
