Tonight on TV: When Will Smith teamed up with Thanos

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: third round for agents J and K.

Released in 1997, Men in Black grossed nearly 600 million dollars worldwide (including 250 in the United States alone), for a budget of 90 million. This success logically marks the starting point of a franchise completed in 2002 by Men in Black II, then in 2012 by Men in Black III.

Faithful to his post, director Barry Sonnenfeld is back in action although the project for the third part suffers from some production problems. The writing of the script passed through several hands – Jeff Nathanson, David Koepp, then Etan Cohen – without a final version being completed at the time of filming.

Indeed, the plot of this third opus becomes more complex due to time travel: when the fate of the Earth is threatened, Agent J decides to go back in time to put things in order. He will therefore team up with the younger Agent K to save the future of humanity.

After four years of absence from the screens, the bankable Will Smith is also back in the lead alongside newcomer Josh Brolin. The future interpreter of the big bad Thanos, in the MCU universe, plays here a young version of Tommy Lee Jones, whose facial expressions he copies with talent, helped by makeup and a nasal prosthesis.

Despite its production problems (and going over budget), Men in Black III is based on the ingredients that made the franchise successful: a perfect casting, a good dose of humor, impeccable special effects and truly touching scenes.

Upon its release, the film grossed $624 million in worldwide revenue, for a budget of $225 million. In France, it has a total of 2.1 million entries.
