Tonight on TV: with a rating of 4.1 out of 5, it’s one of the best musical films… and proof that Lady Gaga is also a great actress

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Bradley Cooper’s first production, and what a first!

Pure piece of cinema, A Star Is Born arrives this evening on TF1! A great old-fashioned melodrama led by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga which has a good chance of sweeping you away and making you shed a few tears. While leaving you with some strong images and melodies in your head…

A great romantic film, A Star Is Born, released in theaters in 2018, tells the story of Jackson (Bradley Cooper), a somewhat forgotten country star who discovers Ally, a very promising young singer played by an incredible Lady Gaga (whose studio didn’t want to though!). As they fall madly in love with each other, Jack propels Ally to the forefront and makes her an artist adored by the public. Soon eclipsed by the success of the young woman, he experiences his own decline more and more uncomfortably…

Fourth rereading of A Star Is Born, the film by William A. Wellman released in 1937, A Star Is Born marks Bradley Cooper’s first directorial effort in a register where one did not necessarily expect it. And it’s quite a success, provided you let yourself be carried away by the wild romanticism of this love story full of great feelings and music. If so, you will be moved like never before by this story of great power.

If A Star Is Born is so successful, it is largely thanks to Lady Gaga, who proves here that she is not only a singer but also a great actress. His performance, full of sensitivity, should not leave you indifferent…

No playback and an Oscar

Note that Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (who took singing lessons for his role as a country star) agreed to film all their performances live, without resorting to playback. “Singing means showing incredible honesty: it’s impossible to hide anything. It seemed to me that I could bring these two themes together to reveal my point of view”explains Cooper. “Everything that is sung in the film is live, nothing was pre-recorded and I think that’s how we managed to capture the sincerity of each interpretation.”

A Star Is Born, which attracted more than 2 million spectators in French theaters, won the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Song for the piece Shallowperformed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

What if, quietly from your sofa, you witnessed the birth of a star?
