The Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 was one of the bike surprises of the past year, if not the biggest of the surprises: the Americans created an excellent travel enduro from scratch, which is not behind the established competitors have to do. Only one feature has been sorely missed so far – but that is available now.
It was the surprise of the surprise and hardly any of the journalists I spoke to about the big hit from Milwaukee was not surprised that they of all things decided not to offer a quickshifter. A component that long-distance endurists spoiled for comfort do not want to do without, no matter how well the clutch and transmission work. But with the current model year, our wish – one could almost say our demand – has been granted: the quickshifter can be ordered. At the presentation in spring 2021, those responsible were flabbergasted by the vehemence with which the shift assistant was given the must-have seal. There was nothing more to do at the start of the model year, okay, with blue/white there is a new color combination .The rest was already thought through, as you can read here in the driving report and check out the video. Even the basic model has a (manually) adjustable chassis, a 6.8-inch touchscreen, LED light all around, a height-adjustable seat, a large, adjustable windshield and the complete assistance package with a six-axis IMU on board. The Special also includes, among other things, the semi-active Showa chassis with automatic load compensation, adaptive LED cornering lights, tire pressure monitoring, center stand, an adjustable brake pedal, protective bar, engine protection, hand guards, heated grips and a steering damper. Optionally, the chassis lowers when stopping, so that drivers with shorter legs can reach the ground without any problems. Something else has changed: the price has increased by around 1000 euros. The standard version now costs 19,985 euros, while the special version costs at least 22,835 euros. Incidentally, the quickshifter does not come ex works, but must be purchased as an accessory. The installation is then added to the price of 392 euros.
