In the noughties, Smart already had specific plans to introduce an SUV model called the Formore. This project will become a reality next year, albeit under completely new framework conditions.
As is well known, Smart was transferred to a joint venture between Mercedes and the Chinese car maker Geely in 2019. The small car brand plans to present its first SUV model at the IAA Mobility in September.
The eSUV concept, officially declared as a study, gives an outlook on a series model, which will probably be available in 2022, as well as a fundamental transformation from the one-car brand in the micro-segment to a provider with a broad portfolio and larger models.
The basis of the Smart is Chinese
The near-series eSUV is based on Geely’s all-electric SEA platform. Despite progressive details such as recessed door handles, it should still remain recognizable as Smart. Part of the transformation of Smart will also be a new direct sales of the vehicles.
With the introduction of the SUV, Smart is giving up its previous solitary position as a manufacturer of cars with small traffic areas especially for urban areas and entering the competition for small and compact SUVs.
