TotalEnergies launches construction of a solar power plant in South Africa

(AOF) – TotalEnergies and its partners are launching the construction in South Africa of a large hybrid renewable project comprising a 216 MW solar power plant as well as a 500 MWh battery storage system intended to manage intermittent production solar. Located in the Northern Cape province, the site will supply renewable electricity for 20 years to the South African national grid, the equivalent of more than 400 GWh per year. The project, whose financial closing was achieved on December 14, should be operational in 2025.

Under a power sales contract (PPA) signed last November, and thanks to the storage system, the project will provide 75 MW of production to the national electricity supplier Eskom continuously, between 5 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., i.e. over a wider time range than that of the availability of the sun.

The project is developed by a consortium composed of TotalEnergies (35%), Hydra Storage Holding (35%) and a B-BBEE certified partner, Reatile Renewables (30%).

This program is part of the national RMIPPPP3 program launched by the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy to develop electricity production capacity and reduce the country’s electricity supply constraints.
