The deck of a bridge on the third line of the Toulouse metro collapsed on Monday, killing one person and injuring several people, according to the Toulouse public prosecutor’s office which opened an investigation. “One person died” and “several people were taken care of” by emergency services, prosecutor Samuel Vuelta-Simon, who was on the scene in the town of Labège, in the suburbs near Toulouse, told AFP.
“A serious accident”, according to the SDIS
“Search operations are underway,” said the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS) of Haute-Garonne, which specified that around fifty firefighters with 20 vehicles had intervened from 5:05 p.m.
It is “a serious accident, due to its scale”, explained an SDIS source, describing a “quite impressive” scene where “around twenty meters of bridge collapsed”. The accident took place on the construction site of line C in an area closed to the public, said Tisséo, the Toulouse public transport network. Line C of the Toulouse metro, work on which was launched at the end of December 2022, must be put into service in 2028.
