Tourist traffic on the roads – traffic jam at the Gotthard north portal has cleared – News

  • A lot of patience was needed on the traffic routes to the south on Saturday.
  • In the meantime, cars were backed up for 13 kilometers in front of the Gotthard north portal on the A2 motorway.
  • The traffic jam cleared by 8 p.m. on Saturday.

A ten-kilometer traffic jam had already formed between Erstfeld and Göschenen (UR) at around 4:30 a.m., as the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) announced on the short message service Twitter.

The cars were also slowed down on the south side of the Gotthard tunnel between Quinto and Airolo (TI): In the meantime there was a traffic jam several kilometers long.

Traffic jam also on the driveways

There were also traffic jams on the access road, for example on the A2 in the cantons of Baselland, Solothurn and Lucerne and on the A1 near Niederbipp (BE) and at the Gubrist tunnel (ZH).

In Switzerland’s neighboring country of Austria, car avalanches also rolled south and came to a standstill. The most affected were the important north-south route via the Tauern Autobahn (A10) and the Karawanken Autobahn (A11), but also the Fernpass route (B 179), as the Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club (ÖAMTC) announced. The waiting times were up to 80 minutes.

The summer holidays also started in the cantons of Zurich and Aargau at the weekend. Holidays are now valid in all Swiss cantons.
