Paris is at the top of an international ranking, but the news will not delight Parisians. The capital has been named the second most congested city in the world according to a ranking by the Inrix Institute, published on December 7. The study, which combines data from a thousand metropolises around the world over the past six months, estimates the average number of hours lost by Parisians in traffic jams at 140 this year.
Last year, the capital was already in sixth place in this ranking, which links these traffic jams to the basis of the use of public transport following the appearance of Covid-19. According to the institute, the pandemic is responsible for a 45% drop in the use of these means of transport, in favor of the car therefore.
Ahead of Paris, London is on the first step of this podium, with 148 hours of traffic jams on average over the past year. In third position, Brussels, with 134 hours. Then come Moscow, and New York, fourth according to the ranking, which does not only include major capitals.
Several French metropolises are in the first places. According to Lyon (Rhône), in 12th place, then Nîmes (Gard) and Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), respectively 20th and 21st. What is true in France is also true for most of the cities analyzed: the traffic density would have increased considerably in the space of a year.
