Transparent technology is often fascinating at first glance. This is also the calculation of manufacturers such as LG and Xiaomi, who recently attracted attention with transparent televisions. Even in-ear headphones suddenly become more interesting when they are transparent. You quickly look twice, three, four times.

The principle of transparent sensationalism already worked with Pontiac’s transparent “ghost car” – that was in 1939. But who really wants to drive to work in a transparent car or actually watch the movie on the transparent TV?
Secondary if you’re standing in front of this Lenovo laptop for the first time, which made headlines in the run-up to MWC. The extremely bright display simply deflects questions about the purpose of such a product. Lenovo states 1,000 nits, but to us it seems at least twice as bright.
According to the manufacturer, it is the world’s first transparent 17.3-inch Micro LED display and it has no bezels. In short: it is an absolute eye-catcher.

“The brilliance of this laptop lies in the intelligent integration of the virtual and the real. Powered by Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC), the transparent screen opens up new avenues of collaboration and efficiency by enabling interaction with physical objects and overlaying digital information, to create unique user-generated content (…). Artificial intelligence combined with transparent displays will open up new ways of handling data and applications and provide opportunities to develop new functions and form factors,” says Lenovo.
The laptop is purely a feasibility study and will never go on sale in this form. Customers would probably immediately complain about the virtual keyboard, which also looks nice, but only works according to the “10-finger search principle”. Type blindly? Impossible.
It will be exciting to see how far Lenovo will pursue this idea. In a conversation with Netzwelt there was talk of new possibilities that a transparent display can play in conjunction with mixed reality. That lights us up. Another, more special scenario: Artists should be able to use a pen to draw a motif that they look at through the display.
