Travel accident – caravan was catapulted onto railway tracks

A busy transit route in the Tyrolean town of Ausserfern had to be closed for around two hours on Saturday afternoon. The reason was a spectacular accident in which two vehicles were involved. A caravan was catapulted from the Fernpass road onto the tracks of the Ausserfernbahn.

The accident occurred around midday near Heiterwang. A driver from Romania, who was traveling with a woman and a small child, attempted an overtaking maneuver in his BMW. But the driver had to stop the action because it was impossible because of oncoming traffic. The Romanian wanted to put his vehicle back in the right lane. He hit the car and caravan of a German family. The railway line is currently not used. As a result, both vehicles came off the road. The caravan overturned and landed on the train tracks. A blessing in disguise: the railway line is currently closed due to construction work. According to initial police reports, three passengers in the German vehicle were injured in the accident. The occupants of the BMW were uninjured. Long traffic jams quickly formed. Due to the accident, the Fernpass road was closed in both directions for around two hours. Traffic jams quickly formed. In the direction of Nassereith, this stretched back from Heiterwang to the Füssen border crossing. In the opposite direction of travel, the traffic jam was also several kilometers long.
