Travel impressions – Leo Fellinger: Art photography meets wit

The travel impressions in the new photo and text volume by Salzburg photographer Leo Fellinger are all in black and white. But they are not “colorless” in the sense of inconspicuous or even boring, on the contrary: photo aesthetics meet wit.

“Venice: Dear pen pal, did you know that the Piazza San Marco is swept every morning with simple brushes? That Venice tilts slightly to the east when it sinks? And that there are 600 tourists for every citizen? ”This is how Leo Fellinger’s travel diary begins, in which the Salzburg artist combines photo and language aesthetics with a fine blade.

You look in vain for color images and that’s a good thing. “Black and white photos have great power because you think differently when you take them. The picture has to tell a story because it doesn’t have the seductive colors, ”says Fellinger. His travels took him around the world – they turned into notes, stories. “I really wrote that back then,” he asks himself when reading a text that reads like another “me”. Traveling changes perception, you are a different person. This is where the title of Fellinger’s illustrated book comes from: “I am the other” (Otto Müller Verlag).
