Holiday prices will also rise in 2024, but at a lower level than in recent years. What trends are still emerging?

In times of inflation, saving is the order of the day – even when traveling. Early bookers in particular can still get bargains here a current price analysis from the rating and booking portal HolidayCheck shows. The evaluation takes a look at the travel trends for 2024 and predicts positive developments in the area of package tours and rental car bookings.

Prices for package holidays are increasing by an average of three percent compared to the previous year, which represents a clear contrast to the eleven percent price increase from 2022 to 2023. Christoph Heinzmann, travel expert at HolidayCheck, explains that an increase of between five and eight percent in the last three years was considered normal and therefore emphasizes: “The current price level can be viewed as really positive.”

What is particularly noticeable is the increasing trend towards early bookings, which was already evident in mid-October with an average increase of 24 percent compared to the previous year. Fuerteventura, Mallorca and the Turkish Riviera are the focus of travel planning, with Mallorca standing out with an increase in bookings of almost 40 percent in mid-November. The increasing demand for early bird offers can be explained by the limited availability of the most popular hotels, room categories and flight connections, says Heinzmann.

Price increases moderately, rental cars are mostly cheaper

The price increase for holidays at Easter 2024 is two percent, while it is three percent for the coming summer. In some regions, such as the Turkish Aegean and Turkish Riviera, the cheapest family holidays are available from 2,400 euros for a week during the German Easter holidays, down about 6 percent compared to the same period in 2023. In addition to Turkey, cheap travel options for Easter and summer 2024 include Gran Canaria (-14 percent at Easter compared to 2023) and Monastir in Tunisia (-3 percent during the summer holidays). Also at the top of the searches are Dubai (-9 percent in the summer), Marsa Alam and El Quseir (-4 percent in the summer, both Egypt) and the Greek island of Rhodes (also -4 percent in the summer).

There is currently no reluctance when it comes to searches, but there is reluctance when it comes to making final bookings for the otherwise very popular travel destinations in Egypt. Travel expert Heinzmann explains this with the current political situation: “We can see from the search queries that there is great interest in Egypt. But if the situation continues to be tense, we assume that bookings will be made at shorter notice.” Holidaymakers can find current information on travel safety in Egypt and other countries on the Foreign Office website. German citizens can also register there “Elephant” crisis preparedness list (Electronic registration of Germans abroad) if they are abroad.

The early bird offers for rental cars in popular destinations such as Mallorca, Sardinia, Crete and Lisbon are also a positive surprise, as the prices per day are even cheaper compared to last year. This is probably due to the now more relaxed situation among vehicle manufacturers and suppliers; The problems in the international supply chains had led to delivery bottlenecks for new vehicles and therefore also rental cars since the beginning of the corona pandemic.
