Treat sinusitis gently

An aborted cold can end in sinusitis. To get rid of the unpleasant pressure, patience and the right home remedies are needed.

What is a sinusitis (sinusitis)?

In sinusitis, the mucosa of the sinuses is inflamed. These are air-filled cavities that are connected to the nose. Sinusitis can have both an acute and a chronic course. By the inflammation, the mucous membranes of the sinuses swell and produce excess secretion, which then continuously seeps out of the nose in the form of mucus and prevents nasal breathing.

Do I have acute or chronic sinusitis?

It depends on the duration of the symptoms, what form of sinusitis is present. An acute can take two to four weeks, a chronic one to twelve weeks. If sinusitis occurs more than four times a year, but it always stops completely in between, it is called a recurrent course.

How does a sinusitis develop?

Acute sinusitis often develops from a common cold (rhinitis) after pathogens have attacked the nose. The transition is usually fluent – and since the symptoms are similar, it is not always easy to distinguish between them. In medicine, rhinosinusitis is used in this case.  Incidentally, sinusitis can affect any of the paranasal sinuses – from the maxillary sinus to the frontal and sphenoidal sinuses to the ethmoid bone, where the sensory ethmoidal cells are located.

Symptoms of sinusitis

In addition to severe cold , sinusitis also manifests itself in the following symptoms:

  • Pressure pain in the head and face
  • Disturbed sense of smell
  • toothache
  • Frequently strong feeling of illness
  • Stuffy nose

Which home remedies help with sinusitis?

Although the sinusitis is annoying by the strong cold and thus constantly running nose, usually heals without consequences. To alleviate the symptoms, some home remedies are available:

  • Inhaling with chamomile or Ems salt allows the pus to drain faster from the sinuses. Drink plenty of fluids to make the viscous mucus smoother
  • Sleep at night with your upper body raised
  • A nasal rinse helps with a blocked nose. For this, cook a tablespoon of banana tea (tea and organic shop, health food store) in a liter of water for ten minutes. Then strain and add a teaspoon of sea salt. Let mixture cool, fill in a nasal douche (pharmacy, drugstore) and rinse your nose with it.
  • Nose clogged ? Decongestant nasal spray opens the sinuses in the nose and allows the mucous membrane to subside. However, nasal spray should be used for a maximum of a few days
  • Nasal ointment containing peppermint and thyme oil. So the skin between the nose and upper lip does not dry out too fast

In addition, home remedies for cold , home remedies for cough and home remedies for sore throat also help with sinusitis.

When to the doctor?

For complications such as fever, strong pressure in the forehead or upper jaw and purulent runny nose , which is not significantly better after three days, a doctor should be consulted.

Prevention of sinusitis

Treat each cold in time (drink plenty of water, use nasal drops with saline or decongestant nasal spray) so that it does not cause sinusitis.
